Heated Socks Buying Guide

Whether you’re looking for a pair of high quality heated socks for skiing, hunting, camping, or simply to keep your feet warm while you’re lounging around your home, this guide will help you out!

Have you ever wondered why your feet are always cold in winter? The answer is because our bodies are smart.

That might not make sense at first, but warm feet are the product of good circulation. When you get cold, your body senses it and prioritizes blood flow to vital organs to maintain your core body temperature (which is essential to keep you alive).

Reduced circulation to the extremities is why our feet and hands get cold during the winter months. But, if you’re one of those people who are always cold, or are tired of having cold feet, there is good news. We are here to talk about an easy solution to cold feet, heated socks.

They’re perfect for those cold winter months and will leave your feet warm and happy, even when your core organs are hogging all the circulation. electric socks are great for lounging around the house, camping, ice fishing, hiking, and/or most outdoor activities.

Before I get into the list of my favorite socks, here are some important tips on things you might want to consider before hitting that add to cart button. Also, you might want to check out my review on wool socks they are nature’s solution to cold feet!

5 Tips to Find the Best Electric Socks for You

Electric socks are typically powered by a dedicated rechargeable battery they come with, but some runoff external batteries (like AA or 9 volts). Here are some things you’ll want to look for when choosing a pair.

1. Comfort

Isn’t this the end goal after all? Regardless of what pair you decide on, comfort should be a top priority. Take a look at the fabrics used, design, and other customer reviews. Don’t be swayed by stats on max heat or promises of how toasty and warm your feet are going to be. All that’s not worth it if the socks don’t keep your feet feeling good. If you walk around or hike with uncomfortable and irritating socks, it will ruin your whole day/experience.

Fortunately, there are many brands (most on this list) that pay close attention and design/comfort. The best socks are designed to be comfortable, but still undetectable when worn (not that anyone would really care that you’re wearing heated socks).

2. Design and Heat Distribution

Examine the design, you don’t want to get socks that have bulky battery packs that jab into your feet or calf. Generally, they have no problems getting or staying hot, unlike the cheap foot warmers you can buy at the store. But, the distribution of that heat can be a problem if you choose a poorly designed pair, which is why this is an important consideration. Ideally, you want evenly distributed heat that is spread across the entire surface of the foot and doesn’t just get lava hot in one spot.

Also, if the socks are too hot, that can lead to sweating, and nobody likes having wet/sweaty feet. So look for socks with adjustable power settings. Many even come with a remote controller that allows you to adjust the temperature (great if you have a bunch of gear on). It’s hard to know if a pair of socks can distribute heat well just by looking at them, so I recommend reading my reviews below or checking out what other customers are saying in their reviews.

3. Battery Life

Another important factor to consider is battery life. Sure, comfort is the top priority, but if your socks only stay heated for a short period, you basically just have expensive socks on. So you can see why it’s important to look at the specifications of each sock and check the estimated battery life.

There are some socks on this list that can keep your feet toasty and warm for over 10 hours, but they tend to be a little expensive. Often, the price of heated socks is directly related to battery life.

4. Style

Although heated socks shouldn’t be treated as a fashion accessory, they should be concealable and discreet under your pants when you want them to be. Most people don’t want to be seen walking around with large battery packs and wires hanging from their shoes/boots. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to give up your personal style in exchange for warm feet. You can find a nice pair that blends outfit while secretly warming your feet at the same time.

5. Most Sock for the Money

Compare the price, quality, battery life, and other features so you can rest assured you aren’t overpaying. Don’t go into the buying process thinking that price is directly correlated with quality. Apart from that, you should know about the types of heated socks as well. Typically, socks with rechargeable batteries cost more, but you’ll save money you would have to spend on external batteries down the road, so that’s another thing to consider.

The 5 Types of Heated Socks

There are different types of electric socks for you to choose from. But before buying any particular one for you, you might want to know a little bit about all its types:

1. Electric Socks with External Batteries

These socks use external batteries that you have to buy separately and insert into the battery area of the socks. They can also be used as the traditional winter socks when the heating feature is not turned on. Whenever you need to use them as the heated socks, just put in some batteries and let the heat flow through the socks to your feet. These socks can keep you warm for a long time when you’re outdoors and are good if you aren’t going to be able to make it to a power outlet for a long period.

2. Rechargeable Battery Heated Socks

Rechargeable heated socks are great for freezing cold days when the only thing you want is warm feet. Rechargeable battery socks often have three different temperature settings: Low,  medium, and high. They typically run from anywhere between three hours to ten hours run time on a single charge. Rechargeable battery socks are comfortable, often have a reinforced padded heel and the good ones are breathable. If you choose a quality brand, you can wear these socks on rainy days without worrying about the rechargeable batteries being ruined, which is nice because new batteries can be expensive. These socks are convenient for long trips with the portable charger as well.

3. Heated Insoles

Heated insoles can be a viable alternative to standard battery heated socks. If you don’t already know, they’re inserts you put into your shoes to keep your feet warm. They function the same as the heated socks by electronically heating your feet from the bottom. Heated insoles often come with a temperature control system, and can have a battery life of up to 10 hours when used on the lowest setting.

Heated insoles are not as versatile as the heated socks since they do not fit inside all shoes and they are slightly more expensive. So, you have to decide this would be a good option for you.

4. Warm Insulated Socks

Most people have worn thermal insulated socks, they keep the warmth from body heat in and the cold out. The best thing about insulated socks that are heated is that you can turn off heating once your socks reach your desired temperature. This can greatly extend the battery life of your socks. These socks often work best in the most extreme conditions to keep your feet warm, dry, and comfortable.

5. Microwavable Socks

Yes, you heard it right. Socks can be microwaved. We know this might sound a little strange but microwavable socks actually help you make your feet warm and comfortable in extremely cold weather. If you are someone with chronically cold feet or need a great gift for someone who is always cold, these socks can be very helpful. You can simply heat these socks in a microwave and put them on easing tension and keeping your feet warm on those long winter nights.

Okay, let’s get to it.

Upgraded Heated Socks,7.4V 2200MAH Electric Rechargeable Battery Heating Socks for Men Women,Winter Outdoor Sports Ski Hunting Camping Hiking Climbing Riding Motorcycle Warm Cotton Socks Foot Warmer

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: While these are not the best socks on this list, I do think that they’re the best value. There are a ton of heated socks out there, but very few are actually worth buying. If you’re someone who suffers from chronically cold feet you probably already know that most socks heated socks are junk and don’t work. These socks are designed surprisingly well considered their price point. They come in two gender neutral colors (black and grey). One thing I like about them is that they are rechargeable and don’t require huge bulk battery packs like many of the other electric socks out there.

They are made of 80 percent cotton, 12 percent polyester, and 8 percent elastane blend. The blend would not be my first choice, as I generally prefer wool socks. That said, they’re a reasonable price and will get the job done!

Key Specifications

  • Cotton blend
  • Rechargeable
  • 3 heat settings
  • Hand washable
  • 1-year warranty (refer to the product page to see if this is still valid)

2. Flambeau Heated Socks Kit

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: Flambeau socks come with a carbon fiber heating element to keep your feet warm during even the coldest months of the year. They’re medium weight socks specifically designed to give you a perfect combination of warmth and comfort.

The best thing about these socks are they are made up of wool, cotton, and polyester blend that is breathable and comfortable. When comparing clothing fabrics, nothing beats wool in terms of warmth. The socks come with two 3.7 Volt rechargeable Li-ion batteries, 1 AC charger, and a dual mini-USB cable to charge the batteries. These socks are even great to wear with boots when skiing and snowboarding. With a battery life of up 8 hours on the low power setting, you can see why these socks are on the list.

The only drawback of these socks is the battery charge time. It takes around 8 hours to fully charge the batteries, which is quite lengthy, but not a big deal if you just charge them while you’re sleeping. These socks are very warm and comfortable even without batteries. Some people complain about the wires in the socks and say the wires shifted after they had the socks for a while, which got annoying. A solution to this problem if it does occur, is to wear an extra pair of socks under them.

Key Specifications

  • Wool, cotton and polyester blend
  • Carbon fiber heating to provide warmth in winter.
  • Medium weight
  • Comfortable battery compartment location

3. TherMedic Electric Heated Socks

My Review: These certainly aren’t the best socks on this list, but considering they’re reasonably priced, so I decided to add them to the list. The biggest complaint about these socks is that they require 8 AA batteries to operate. Whether you have cold feet because of the weather, circulatory problems, or health conditions like diabetes, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, or hypothyroidism, these socks are designed to provide safe and effective heat therapy. They’re designed for someone with decreased circulatory ability.

For chronically cold feet, Far Infrared Ray (FIR) is a great way to provide relief. These socks have been tested against conventional heat therapy, and in many cases show to be more effective because the heat penetrates deeper into the skin without damaging it. The bottom line is these socks can increase the blood flow to your feet and provide comfort and relief from cold feet symptoms. I recommend reading the full product description for more detailed information.

Here is a video from the company.

12. Qilove Extra Warm Rechargeable Battery Heated Socks

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: These are some pretty basic warming socks with a handy little remote control that allows you to easily flip between settings. I wouldn’t say they stand out to me in any particular category but more so simply get the job done and do it for a price I can’t complain about.

The socks themselves are a mix of comfortable cotton and elastic so that you get both a comfortable user experience with the support and tightness to keep the socks in the position you need without worrying about them falling down and bunching up.

The heating element has three different temperature settings that can be cycled between easily on the go. A common gripe with socks like these is that you’re usually wearing pants over them, making the remote holder tough to get to, but after a while, you get used to it and you can switch settings through your pants, you just need a little practice! Battery life originating from a standard lithium-ion pack sits around the 3-hour mark for the highest settings, 5 hours for medium setting, and a whopping 6.5 hours at the lowest setting.

Key Specifications

  • Cotton and elastic blend for comfort and stability
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack lasting an average of 5 hours per charge on medium warmth setting
  • Reinforced heel and toe that ensures you cannot feel the hardware of the heating element
  • Available in Black, Gray, or Pink color schemes

13. Rabbitroom Insulated Thermal Socks

Rabbitroom Heated Socks with Rechargeable 3.7V Li-ion Batteries, Electric Thermal Insulated Socks for Arthritis, Winter Thick Heating Foot Warmer, Unisex & Free Size (RoyalBlue)

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: These are rather nifty little socks to have on hand and at under $45, I’d say if you live in a place where it’s cold often, these are must-haves! Like many of the other socks on this list, they utilize a battery pack that hides away on the upper edge of the socks, which is a design I wish could be changed although I have no idea what else they would do with the batteries. Unlike the cheaper models that are similar to this, these don’t fall down from the weight and are rather tight on the legs ensuring that they stay put even under heavy usage.

These heating socks have the standard three temperature control options controlled from the battery pack. The maximum temperature they reach is roughly 125F which for me, was actually more than I wanted, so there is no shortage of heating capabilities! These are using 3.7V rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are of course included and partially charged when you get them.

Just a quick little rant here. Many of these sock manufacturers, including this one, claim they reduce soreness and help with blood flow. Now, I’m certainly not a health professional or physiological scientist, but I’m having trouble believing those claims and I personally don’t think there is much if any difference in circulation or soreness when using any of these. I would just dismiss these claims and buy the socks you think will fit you the best and offer the quality to price ratio you need.

Key Specifications

  • Available in Royal Blue, Pink, Green with White accents, and Green with Yellow accents
  • Three temperature control options with the highest reaching 125F
  • These offer a very good price to quality ratio, not being the best and most expensive but still being affordable and pretty good

14. Pristall Remote Control Heated Athletic Socks

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: These are probably the most expensive single pair of socks on this list and I can’t tell you whether they’re really worth it or not for a few reasons. One, in my experience, these heated socks all do relatively the same job with the main price dependent being the general quality of the sock itself. I most certainly think spending more than just $20 is warranted, otherwise, you’ll get socks that are totally awful and uncomfortable. On the flip side, is spending almost a hundred bucks on these going overboard?

Not really, not if you really like quality athletic socks. These are probably a bit overkill for the average person reading this article, but if you’re an avid outdoorsman or a slope bunny, these are a great buy and will definitely live through far more abuse than other thermal socks I’ve tested.

The Pristall heated socks actually come with a battery life indicator which is actually a big deal considering most other heated socks do not come with this and often leave you guessing whether or not you’ll have enough power for your activities.

Since these are athletic socks in nature, they don’t hold the heat very well and lack insulation. I know, that sounds like a con, and to some, it might be, but for me, I actually liked that I could have socks that easily dry and allow my feet to breath while still having a heating element. Some other heated socks can leave your feet too hot, making them sweat and then when the battery dies you’re actually worse off than had you not had heating socks at all. That problem is not really an issue with the Pristall heated socks which makes the price tag worth it to me.

As a final note, you use a wireless remote that needs to be paired with the socks before you can use them. The pairing process is extremely easy and certainly well worth not having to push through your pants trying to find the buttons or whatever. The remote is keychain friendly and is also small enough to make a minimal impact in your pockets.

Key Specifications

  • Heating elements are located under the toe and ball of your foot which is among my favorite designs in all of the thermal socks I’ve reviewed
  • Included 2400mAh 8.88W batteries offer best in class battery performance and a battery indicator
  • These utilize a wireless remote with three temperature control options

15. Raynaud Electric Foot Warming Socks

Heated Socks for Men Women, Electric Rechargeable Battery Heating Socks for Winter Sports Arthritis Raynaud Winter Snow Ski Hunting Camping Hiking Riding Warm (Black/White 1, L)

Check Price on Amazon

My Review: The Raynaud heated socks seem to be in a rather sweet spot of price to value and at under eighty bucks, I’d say the price is quite fair and reasonable, although if you have the extra cash, I’d for sure recommend the Pristall socks over these just for the larger battery and more athletic design.

Speaking of battery, let’s get that out of the way. These are sporting a 2200mAh 7.4W rechargeable lithium-Ion battery pack in which you can buy extra’s at this link here. Some thermal socks have batteries that are basically built-in, so I do like that I can swap these out easily and have multiple on hand for long trips. On the lowest power setting, you can expect to get about 7 hours of life out of one battery. Speaking of settings, you get three options for temperature control.

I kind of hated on these earlier in the review by recommending the Pristall socks if you can afford them but that doesn’t do this justice. These are made out of a very comfortable 80/20% cotton and stretchable materials to offer decent performance in outdoor activities like snowboarding. I really like that these offer the comfort and insulation of heavy wool socks while still being stretchy and rather usable in tough conditions.

Key Specifications

  • Powered by a removable and rechargeable 2200mAh 7.4W lithium-ion battery
  • Expect roughly 4 hours of usage time switching from the highest setting to the lowest setting after they are fully heated
  • An excellent middle ground between comfort and athletic performance

Frequently Asked Questions

Can electrically heated stocks cause fires?

I don’t like to say never, so I won’t, but it’s highly highly unlikely. Electric socks will not catch fire so long as your battery is working fine and intact. If you notice your battery is releasing a funky smell or has been damaged, I advise you replace the battery immediately.

How can I wash heated socks?

I recommend hand-washing the socks carefully without exposing them to harmful chemicals and then air dry them. An even better and more “safe” answer to this question is to refer to the manual of the specific socks you decide to order. Different socks come with different washing instructions depending on the fabrics and battery type/location. So, read them carefully, but the general answer to the question is yes.

Does the battery part of the sock get uncomfortable?

Usually, all the battery heated socks have been designed in a way that battery isn’t really noticeable or uncomfortable. However, some socks might cause a little discomfort depending on what type of boots you’re wearing, so try and analyze the socks well and read reviews before buying them to make sure they are comfortable and worth your hard-earned money.

Are battery-powered socks waterproof?

Some of them are and some of them are not. Always refer to the manual of the socks you decide to order for the most accurate and detailed information. It will tell you if the particular socks are waterproof or not.

Do battery powered socks break easily?

Usually, battery heated socks last a long time as long as you don’t abuse them. Their durability entirely depends on the quality and the care you give them. Low-quality socks may get holes and tears in a few months. On the other hand, high quality socks can last really long even for years. You also have to take care of the batteries.

Why are electric socks so expensive?

The material used to create the socks are durable and better than that of cheap conventional cotton socks. Furthermore, these socks use batteries to generate heat (we all know batteries are expensive). Additionally, they last for years unlike the normal socks, which last well… not very long. All these factors constitute the higher price of rechargeable electric socks.

How long does the battery last?

This varies greatly from brand to brand, a good quality sock with a high capacity battery may last up to 10 hours (possibly even longer). On the other hand, the battery of cheaper socks can only last 2-4 hours. Battery life will also depend on temperature settings (they will last a lot longer on low-temperature settings).

Can I machine wash electric socks?

No, machine wash can damage the inside heated element or batteries of the socks. Brush clean is the best way to wash them. Also, remove the batteries if you can before washing them.

Can I replace the battery?

Only in the case of replaceable battery heated socks. If your socks do not come with the replaceable battery, you might not be able to replace them.

Can I put these in the dryer?

No, do not dry heated socks in the dryer. They have to be hand washed and air dried.

What size should I buy?

To find the best size for you, it’s not much different than buying standard socks. So, for example, I wear size 13, so I look for a sock that is labeled as like size 12-15. Just know the size of your conventional shoe/socks and you can buy heated socks the same size.

What Are Some Good Uses for Heated Socks?

Heated socks are particularly used to provide warmth and comfort to chronically cold feet. The cold feet can be resulted from:

  1. Extremely cold weather
  2. Diabetes
  3. Circulatory problems
  4. Frost bites
  5. Hypothyroidism
  6. Raynaud’s phenomenon
  7. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
